When a son flies from London to a remote hospital in northern Canada to sit beside his stubborn, estranged father, neither knows if this will be their final goodbye.

 

Expecting the usual tension,  he's pulled into the unexpected as his father - drifting between

lucidity and dream - becomes a surprisingly magnetic storyteller, unspooling tale after

tale from their Ukrainean bloodline - a story spanning three generations  of family, friends

and the hidden  secrets and sometimes bizarre revelations of a clan

bound by struggle and incredible determination.

 

From surviving Stalin's genocide in the 1930's to building a life in the brutal northern wilds of

Canada, from the tales of building an unlikely community \to the war now ripping the

Ukraine apart yet again, a powerful legacy of defiance and endurance begins to

emerge - a legacy that until now, the son has felt completely separate from.

 

But it's the revelation of the father's long-buried secret - five missing years that no one in the

family knows about and of which he's never spoken of - that finally forces a reckoning between

past and present, and a bond between the two men more powerful than either of them

ever dared to believe.
